With the major increase of digital distribution outlets in relation to gaming Sony, creators of the download-only PSPGo will not stick to the method in the already planned Playstation 4. Many assumed that with the mega-corp's pioneering move in the handheld gaming market that the same, or at least a similar mode of software purchasing would be incorporated into the next-gen console. Shuhei Yoshida, Sony's Senior VP of Product Development confirmed the news when he said, "Game developers now have to use the entire capacity of a Blu-ray Disc. But we supplement the offer with smaller titles from the PlayStation Store, but the big blockbuster games will continue to appear on media,"
This also begs the question as to what media he could be talking about. While Blu-ray is the likely format, perhaps Sony will be thinking beyond Blu-ray in order to keep their console current through its likely minimum 10 year lifespan. Blu-ray is top of the agenda now but who's to say that a new form of media wont come out between now and then?
3D is the next movement forward for both film viewing and gaming but with the PS3 already capable of supporting 3D Blu-ray, just what will the notorious technology leaders come up with next. Rumours are already flying around that the global giants are currently in the planning stage of an entirely new disc-based format that is capable of holding up to 6 Terabytes of data! Not only does this excite us, it also scares us a little. Is Blu-ray the future? Will Sony come up with something new? We'll just have to wait and see we guess.
